The Legacy
Education has been a core feature of the Milton’s identity since the very beginning. Founded originally as “Milton Academy” by Joseph Goodrich, the institution evolved into Milton College in 1867 when it achieved it’s charter from the state.
Throughout it’s history, the school has been associated with various notable alumni and faculty, along with having a strong culture of civil and fraternal societies.
In 1982, the College closed it’s doors, leaving bittersweet memories for the town.
The Present
These days, the Main Hall stands in remembrance of the college and the cities contributions to history. It serves as the home of the Milton College Museum under the direction of historian, author, columnist, and advocate, Doug Welch. Other campus buildings have found alternate uses and tenants to keep them alive and maintain their distinct architecture and history.
With numerous rooms of historical documents, images, prints, and artifacts, the Museum is a growing stop for those interested in the history of Wisconsin, Rock County, and Milton.
