November 2024, Anyway…
We grow up in this culture looking forward to thanksgiving for its abundance of food, pies, time with family, and a the kick off of the holiday season. But the giving of thanks always seemed like an “oh yeah, we are supposed to do that as well” sort of aspect to the day; a conversation starter at the meal more than a cornerstone to the event. But being mindful of the good things in ones life is a habit that is key to a good mindset and a healthy psyche.
Those people that are habitually sour and focus on the things that they don't have or things that go poorly are never satisfied. Part of being more thankful, I think, is being modest, forgiving, and accepting of those things beyond your control. The other part is the actual habit.
This year, consider having a notebook or slip of paper with you to jot down the good things that happen to you throughout the day; just a couple of words for each simple little pleasant thing, be it a good sip of morning coffee, decent weather, or the annoying family member calling to inform you that they will not be making it to this years feast. At the end of the day, give it a look over and fill in the gaps you may have missed while too busy basting a bird. You may be surprised how much more you have to be thankful for than you thought. Happy Thanksgiving.
